Maribel Veiga ’27 dreams of becoming a cardiologist or cardiac surgeon. A biology major and professional singer, she approaches healing through medicine, music, and service. At Providence College, she finds opportunities to pursue all three.

She has worked as a research assistant for Brett Pellock, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, studying soil reactions to metal; joined a Guatemala service immersion trip, delivering food, building homes, and teaching children; and gained hands-on medical experience through Brown University’s Rhode to Medicine program.

The program selects promising undergraduates from local colleges for four weeks of hospital-based training.

“Through the program, I became more confident and feel more experienced and ready for the field,” said Veiga, who grew up in Central Falls, Rhode Island.

Her passion for medicine is rooted in personal loss. Her father died of colon cancer when she was 9 after a five-year battle.

“While he was sick, I really wanted him to get better. When he came home from treatment, I would give him water or a massage, thinking it was medicine that could help. That inspired me to take this career path and help others,” she said.

A first-generation college student and recipient of a David and Lynn Angell Scholarship, Veiga chose PC for its reputation and proximity to home. The community and support she has found — especially at the Center at Moore Hall, where she has attended multicultural events, performed, and built friendships — have helped her grow.

“I came to PC not knowing what to expect, and I was a bit shy. But now I feel like I can do anything. I am more connected to the school,” said Veiga, who is a member of PC’s Footprints Gospel Choir, where she fosters connections and engages her passion for music.
