Providence Opportunity Program

The Providence Opportunity Program consists of several signature scholarship programs that affirm the College’s long-standing commitment, rooted in the Catholic and Dominican mission, to provide a high quality education for students who may not otherwise consider PC. These programs are open to all but especially valuable for students who are the first in their families to attend college, those from historically underrepresented backgrounds in higher education, and anyone seeking a strong network of support and mentorship during their college journey.

Students receiving one of the Opportunity Program awards are persistent, motivated, and dynamic college students with exceptional potential for leadership in service of their communities and in their future careers. There is no separate application for any of these scholarships.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship

Since 1968, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship program has successfully graduated well over 600 students. Alumni have entered careers in medicine, business, law, education, and religious life. In addition to the scholarship, recipients of the MLK Scholarship receive academic advising and mentoring, semester cohort meetings, designated programs and services as part of their development plan, and more. They also have their full demonstrated financial need met should financial eligibility exist beyond tuition.

All first-year students who live in the United States and were admitted through the College’s existing admission process and criteria receive consideration for this scholarship. Demonstrated financial need is a key criteria. Recognizing leadership takes on many forms, the selection committee is interested in students who exhibit exemplary personal qualities, display persistence and motivation to achieve goals, and are involved in a variety of activities, service, or employment experience.

Decisions are made by a committee based on the information contained within a student’s Common Application. MLK Scholarship recipients may also qualify for merit-based scholarships, but the total of these scholarships will not exceed full tuition. Need-based financial aid is available to assist with additional expenses.

Cristo Rey Scholarship

The 40+ high schools within the Cristo Rey Network deliver a career focused, college preparatory education in the Catholic tradition for students with limited economic resources, uniquely integrating rigorous academic curricula with four years of professional work experience and support to and through college. We are proud to have 80+ Cristo Rey graduates in our history and 40+ students currently enrolled on our campus.

Providence College awards one full-tuition scholarship to a student from each Cristo Rey high school. In addition, the recipient has their full demonstrated financial need met. Cristo Rey Scholarships are also available for graduates of Cristo Rey high schools applying for transfer admission to PC. Five scholarships are available per year for students enrolling in the fall semester.

Posse Scholarship

Providence College is a proud partner with the Posse Foundation’s New Orleans chapter. In every incoming class, ten students from Louisiana with exceptional potential, a commitment to their education, and demonstrated leadership in their community are invited to join Providence College through the Posse program. In addition to a full-tuition scholarship and their full demonstrated financial need met, these students receive mentorship and support through a cohort-based model led by members of the faculty and Posse Foundation staff.
